The good news is the aviation community of- fers lots of opportunities to get involved, and there are a ton of aviation-oriented activities and camps you can hook into for more learning fun. The possibilities are endless—some in summer, some held during school breaks, and some that go on just about every weekend of the year. Best of all, these programs are located all over the U.S. Many are aviation museum-based activities or take place on a college campus or at an airport. A few use naval or Air Force fa- cilities as their base of operations. Want to know more? Read on! Just for Girls Studies have shown that when it comes to things that involve science, tech- nology, engineering, and math (STEM), the girls and boys seem to focus better when they are separated. This phe- nomenon has been researched to the hilt, and shows itself most clearly in the 9-17 year old population. The studies, both qualitative and anecdotal, say that if you can, it's best to give girls and boys their separate day in the sun. There are several summer opportunities for girls involving STEM activities with an aviation theme. For a mother/daughter experience there is the Nikki Kukwa Me- morial Aviation Camp, run by Ohio-based Kent State University in July. Campers can see how mechanics work at Cleveland- Hopkins airport, as well as have the op- portunity for hands-on with flight simulators, and finally a chance to fly from Kent State's own airport. The three-day experience is an excellent in- troduction to aviation. Are you located in the southwest? You might look toward Texas while plan- ning your summer. EAA's Women Soar You Soar day camp gives girls the opportunity to pair with mentors in various aviation careers and experience a variety of activities at the world's largest general aviation fly-in for four days.
